Living in Broadway

In August 1998 the Broadway Historic District was placed on the National Register of Historic Places, the culmination of years of work in revitalizing and restoring Rock Island's most important residential neighborhood. Just what does this recognition mean to you?

National Recognition

Being placed on the National Register means Broadway has been recognized as a unique neighborhood containing architecture of historical significance that is worth preserving. This recognition makes Broadway more attractive to residents, potential homeowners, and tourists.

Are there restrictions on renovation to my Home?

No. While this national recognition will no doubt spur continued preservation of neighborhood homes, there are not restrictions on what you may or may not do to the exterior or interior of your home, within local building code requirements.

Are there financial incentives for improving my home?

Yes! The State of Illinois offers a property tax assessment freeze program. If you spend over 25% of the assessed value of your home on rehabilitation, you can apply to have your tax restrictions frozen for eight years. There are certain restrictions on qualifying improvements. For more information on this program, click on the following link: http://www.state.il.us/hpa/ps/taxfreeze.htm

Another Reason to Live in Broadway: Walkability!

For those of us already living in Broadway, we know the many benefits of our wonderful historic district.  Of course it all starts with our beautiful historic homes, and the sense of neighborhood you get by working together.  Now we even have our own community garden!  But now you can add one more reason - walkability.  An organization called WalkScore rates neighborhoods on their walkability, which sounds just like what it means.  Your proximity to schools, parks, grocery stores, and other essential services means you are more walkable.  There are numerous benefits to living in a walkable neighborhood, primarily being able to get around without a vehicle. While the rating system is not perfect, it's a good start.  With Broadway being close to downtown Rock Island, Augustana College, and many parks, we rate very highly.  Check out this web-site at www.walkscore.com, plug in your exact address, and see where you rate!
